Developing a New Year's Resolution

A new year presents a great opportunity to set new and exciting goals.  However, setting goals or developing a New Year’s resolution, can take some planning.   If possible, take some time to brainstorm about what area(s) of your life you may want to improve.  For example, if you are a student, take a look at your progress report.  Is your homework average where you want it to be?  If not, set small achievable goals that you can attain every day.  At the end of each week, assess your progress.  Positive results can be a great motivation for eventually boosting your GPA.
New Year’s resolutions come in all shapes and sizes.   Some people have a laundry list of what they would like to achieve, while others may have just one goal.  Either way, it’s easy to get a little overwhelmed.  Here are some tips, offered by the American Psychological Association, about how to “make your new year’s resolution stick”.
1.       Start small.  Make resolutions that you think you can keep.
2.       Change one behavior at a time.  Don’t get overwhelmed and think you have to reassess everything in your like.  Instead, work toward changing one thing at a time.
3.       Talk about it.  Share your experiences with someone you trust.
4.       Don’t beat yourself up.   Everyone has ups and downs; resolve to recover from your mistakes and get back on track.
5.       Ask for support.  Accepting help those who care about your will strengthen your course.
Although these tips are good ones, they are not meant to serve as professional advice.  If you have questions about setting goals, ask for help from someone you trust.  If you are a student, your guidance counselor has an abundance of resources that can help you get started.

First Issue of The Memorial Voice Released

Journalism I is now offered at Memorial High School.  This new course is designed to combine journalistic theory and practice.  According to Mrs. Errickson, it also provides an introduction and overview of the newspaper format.  In addition to writing news articles, students examine news sources, discuss weekly current events, explore important events in journalism history, and research careers in journalism and the newspaper business.  Last month, the students in Mrs. Errickson’s class published the first issue of The Memorial Voice, MHS’s new school newspaper.  Congratulations on a job well done!

Use Social Media to Make a College Connection

Are you interested in going to college?  Are you familiar with popular social media outlets, such as Facebook or Twitter?  If your answer is yes to any one of these questions, you may want to consider using social media to get connected with your favorite colleges and universities.  According to Kaplan’s Test Prep’s 2012 Survey of College Admissions Officers, the majority of higher learning institutions across the country are using social media to help them recruit prospective students.  In fact, 76% of the admissions officers polled report they are using Twitter to help them collect and publish information vital to the admissions process.  Even more astounding, 87% of admissions officers report they are using Facebook to help them recruit and to learn more about potential students.  So why not get connected?  The benefits may include learning whether or not a school is a good fit for you.  If you are already a Facebook or Twitter user, it is also very important to be aware that 35% of the college admissions officers surveyed reported having discovered something about an applicant that negatively impacted their application.
So, are you still wondering when your top schools are offering their next big event for prospective students?  Get connected and the information will come directly to you.  The more you know about a college or university and what it offers academically, socially, and financially, the better informed you will be. This also helps you set and manage realistic expectations concerning the school that you ultimately choose.
